When One Crisis Changes Everything

28 May 2026

For vulnerable families in Atlanta, if often starts with something small.

A few missed shifts because a child is sick. A car that suddenly won’t start. A trip to the emergency room. Fewer hours at work than expected. It doesn’t take much to fall behind.

For households already living paycheck to paycheck, moments like these can quickly spiral into crisis.

The families BCM Georgia serves are working hard to stay afloat. Many rely on a patchwork of part-time jobs, gig work, and temporary employment while searching for stable, full-time opportunities. Even when they are doing everything possible, stability can still feel just out of reach.

One unexpected setback can mean missed rent, mounting bills, sinking credit, and the very real fear of eviction.

That’s where BCM Georgia is able to help.

BCM’s Emergency Assistance Program provides short-term financial support to residents of Fulton County and the City of Atlanta, helping low-income families avoid eviction and utility disconnection during times of acute need. Families find us through referrals from United Way, church partners, social media, online searches, and word of mouth—often while urgently searching for help.

And the need is greater than it may appear.

Underemployment, reduced hours, temporary work, and unstable income continue to leave families financially vulnerable, even when they are employed.

We see this every day through the families who seek assistance.

After unexpectedly losing her job, “Angela,” a mother of two and sole provider for her family, quickly fell behind on rent and faced the real possibility of eviction after several months without stable income. BCM’s Emergency Assistance helped reduce her balance and gave her family the stability they needed while she worked to secure employment again.

A serious health diagnosis left "Jess" unable to work for a few months, causing bills to mount and rent payments to fall behind.  Emergency Assistance provided rental support that prevented eviction for she and her child, and helped her establish a payment plan with her landlord. With stable housing secured, she has was able to focus on treatment while gradually increasing her work hours.

In another case, “Brenda,” a full-time caregiver for an adult family member, lost income when clients began canceling her housekeeping services due to their own financial pinch. As unpaid rent accumulated, the risk of losing housing became immediate. Emergency Assistance helped keep her family safely housed during a difficult season.

“Danielle” lost her job after her car broke down, leaving her unable to get to work. Without reliable transportation or nearby support system, housing insecurity quickly followed. BCM’s assistance helped her catch up on rent and regain stability for herself and her young child.

The stories are different, but the patterns are similar: job loss, caregiving responsibilities, underemployment, unexpected emergencies, and the rising cost of simply getting by.

For many families, BCM’s Emergency Assistance Program becomes the difference between staying housed and falling into long-term housing instability. Atlanta needs this critical program because timely help can sometimes change everything.
